Vote in Advance - by Mail

Advance voting by mail begins 20 days prior to every election.
To vote by mail, complete an Application for an Advance Voting Ballot by Mail and fax to (913) 791-8931, (913) 791-8932 or (913) 791-8933, or mail to Johnson County Election Office, 2101 E. Kansas City Road, Olathe, KS 66061. A separate application must be submitted for each election unless the voter qualifies for permanently sick/disabled status.
Applications are also available at the Election Office and libraries. Completed applications must be received at the Election Office before 5:00 p.m. on the Friday prior to the election.
Applications may be copied. Each voter must sign an application in order to receive a ballot. More than one application may be mailed in the same envelope. Applications are accepted any time during the year in which the election is held, although we do not begin to mail out ballots until 20 days prior to each election.
Your voted ballot may be returned by mail or hand-delivered to the Election Office. After business hours, a drop box is available at the front entrance. Ballots may not be faxed. To be counted, the ballot must be received at the Election Office before 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Advance voting ballots can not be turned in at the polling place. These ballots cannot be counted.
Only permanently sick or disabled voters may apply for permanent advance voting status. Voters may apply for permanent advance voting status by completing the appropriate question on the Application for an Advance Voting Ballot.
Twenty-four-hour caregivers do not qualify for permanent status for themselves. However, they may request to have their ballots mailed to them by submitting an advance application for each election.
A ballot may be picked up for a sick or disabled person on Election Day. It must be returned by 7:00 p.m. in order to be counted.

Vote at the Polls on Election Day

The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Note: For presidential elections, polling places are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Prior to every election, click on Voter Look-Up to view your voter registration record, find your Polling Place, and review your Sample Ballot.
If you are currently a registered voter in Johnson County and you move within Johnson County, you may go to your new polling place, complete a voter registration card and vote a paper ballot. Please call the Election Office to locate your new polling place.
If you are currently a registered voter in Johnson County and you have changed your name since the last election, you may go to your polling place on Election Day, complete a voter registration card and vote a paper ballot.

Advance Voting Tips and Reminders

When voting in advance, you (registered voter) must sign and list residence address on the outside of the ballot envelope. If you forget to sign or list your address on the envelope, your vote cannot be counted.
The signature on the outside of the advance ballot envelope must match the name on the mailing label. If it does not match, your vote cannot be counted.
If you mail your advance ballot, it must be received at the Election Office by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
In a mail ballot election, voted ballots must be received at the Election Office by 12:00 noon on Election Day to be counted.
You may also hand deliver your ballot to the Election Office drop box at the front entrance.
Voted ballots returned by mail or in person after Election Day cannot be counted.
If you forget to mail your advance ballot, you may vote provisionally at your polling place on Election Day.

Safeguarding your Advance Ballot

All voters who are voting by mail should adhere to the following guidelines to protect the integrity of their ballot.

Vote the ballot yourself.
Do not let another person tell you how you should vote.
If you are physically unable to vote the ballot, be certain that the person assisting you can be trusted and is NOT with a political campaign, your employer, agent of employer, or an officer or agent of a union to which you are a member. If you do require assistance, the person who assists you must sign the Affidavit of Assistance on the ballot envelope. Can not be assisted by a Power of Attorney.
The registered voter must sign the ballot envelope. If your ballot envelope does not have a signature and address, your vote cannot be counted.
The ballot envelope signature must match the signature on your voter registration card that is on file at the Election Office. If it does not match, your vote cannot be counted.
Parents, spouses, Power of Attorney (POA) and/or candidates may not sign the ballot envelope for another voter.
If you have moved, you may still be entitled to vote. Contact the Election Office.
Return the ballot to the Johnson County Election Office in person or mail it personally. Do not give your ballot to someone else to return for you.
Only you can protect your ballot and your vote! Allowing someone else to vote your ballot, or allowing someone else to return your ballot is illegal.

Distributing Advance Voting Applications

State law does not permit anyone to interfere with or delay the delivery of any advance voting ballot applications to the county election office. Applications must be faxed or mailed directly to the county election office.
If you are collecting advance voting ballot applications, State law requires that the applications be transmitted ONLY to the county election office within two days after the voter has signed the application for a ballot.
If you are providing envelopes for voters to return advance voting ballot applications, the return address should be provided as follows: Johnson County Election Office, 2101 E Kansas City Road, Olathe, KS 66061. Routing these applications to any address other than the county election office is a violation of State law. KSA 25-1128
