Youth In Democracy - Future Voter Programs

The Johnson County Election Office suggests the following activities for students to celebrate patriotism by participating in Youth in Democracy / Future Voter Programs.

These programs are committed to increasing lifelong voter participation by educating elementary and secondary students and involving them in the voting process. Students have the opportunity to experience the election process through hands-on activities and active participation.

These suggested programs and projects were designed through a cooperative effort of the area schools and the Election Office for implementation by parent organizations.

Design "VOTE" Signs

Elementary and Middle/Junior High students may design "VOTE" signs. The purpose of this program is to develop a lasting family memory of Election Day with the placement of their "VOTE" sign in the front yard of their home on Election Day. The program also benefits the traveling public and serves as a visual reminder to vote on Election Day.

Celebration of Patriotism

Elementary and Middle/Junior High students may coordinate Election Day "celebration of patriotism" activities. Classes can partner with other grade levels to plan a balloon launch, classroom celebration of voting or patriotic parade. Flag stickers or small American flags to fly on Election Day at their homes might be distributed.

Voter Registration Drives at Schools

Students schedule and staff voter registration drives during senior enrollment, senior English classes, last day of school for seniors, or during student council elections. Any student who will be 18 years old during their senior year may register to vote. These registration applications will be held by the Election Office and processed on the student's birth date. The Election Office provides instructions and supplies for voter registration drives.

Voter Registration Drives in the Community

Students select, schedule and staff a voter registration site in their community that has high visibility such as a shopping mall, merchandise store, or movie theatre complex. The Election Office provides instructions and supplies for voter registration drives.

Student Council Elections

Student Council officers coordinate student council elections and request the use of electronic voting machines from the Election Office. To make arrangements, call the Election Office at least one month prior to a scheduled election to check the availability of voting machines. Every effort will be made to accommodate student elections; however, voting machines are not always available during scheduled county elections.

High School Students Serving as Election Workers on Election Day

High school students who are 16 years old and older are encouraged to serve as Election Workers at the polls on Election Day. The goal is one high school student in each polling place in Johnson County. This program provides students the opportunity to participate in government, serve the community, learn about the electoral process, and earn extra dollars. To participate, call the Election Office.

Field Trips and Tours of the Election Office

Students and community groups are invited to the Election Office for a tour of the facilities, presentation of the election process, and the experience of voting on an electronic voting machine.
