Student Activities 2005 - 2006
Brownies and Girl Scouts toured the Election Office in November to learn about the election process. Following the tour, the troops voted in a mock election using the touchscreen voting machines and were provided with election related materials.
Kansas students in grades 4 through 12 participated in the Kansas Student Mock Election on October 30. Results may be viewed here. The Election Office served as election central with students receiving and tallying the votes from students across the state.
Throughout the year, the Election Office provided organizations, community college and school parent groups with election related materials. Groups include: TLC of Olathe, KU Edwards Campus, Johnson County Community College, Service Summit Olathe USD #233, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, Oak Park Elementary, and various parent school groups.
De Soto High School Student Council Officers, Class Officers and Student Council Representatives for 2006 – 2007 were elected April 28, 2006, by students who cast ballots on touchscreen voting machines. Current Student Council members served as election workers.
On April 21 and 22, 2006, eighth-grade students from Wheatridge Middle School and students from Gardner Edgerton High School selected Student Council Officers and Class Officers for the high school for the 2006 – 2007 school year. Approximately one thousand students were eligible to cast ballots on touchscreen voting machines programmed by the Election Office. Student leaders served as the election board.
Student Council Officers, Class Officers and Student Council Representatives were elected by the student body at Mill Valley High School on May 10, 2006. Approximately 600 eligible voters cast ballots on touchscreen voting machines provided by the Election Office. Students served as the election board and processed all voters.
Over 60 students from various area high schools participated in the American Student Government Day in Johnson County on November 17, 2005. The event was sponsored by the American Legion in cooperation with the Board of County Commissioners and Johnson County Government.
Election Commission Brian Newby detailed the election process from the national level to the city level. He highlighted the differences in elections, expectations of voters, anticipated growth of registered voters, impact of election issues, and recruitment of election workers and polling places.
Students were encouraged to register to vote and to participate in the democratic process by serving as election workers. Details of the student election worker program with applications were distributed.
Each student received a packet of election related materials including staff profile, Election Day organizational chart, elected positions and districts in Johnson County, 2006-2007 election calendars, web site information, importance of voting, voter registration application, advance voting details, and materials from the office of the Secretary of State.
On October 4, 2005, Election Commissioner Brian Newby was the guest speaker at a meeting of Cub Scouts from Shawnee and Lenexa. The topic included the US Constitution and elections in Kansas and Johnson County. Each member received election related materials to share with their families.
The 2005-2006 Student Council officers of Central Elementary School in Olathe were elected on October 3. Students in the third, fourth, fifth and six grades cast ballots on touchscreen voting machines provided by the Election Office. Elected were president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Representatives of each class served as the election board and processed the voters.
On August 30, 2005, Boy Scouts from Sunflower Elementary School in Lenexa were guests of the Election Office. The Scouts and parents toured the Election Office and learned the election process. Guests voted on a mock election on touchscreen voting machines. Staff members Diane Burnett and Kathy Spann conducted the tour and provided materials for students to share with their families.
On May 19, 2005, the student body at Mill Valley High School elected Student Council Officers, Class Officers and Representatives for leadership positions in the school year 2005 - 2006.
Members of the current Student Council served as the election board. Approximately 449 students cast their ballot on touchscreen voting machines programmed by the Election Office.
The Election Office joined the Johnson County Government in the celebration of "Bring Your Child to Work Day" on April 28, 2005, at the County Administration Building.
Election Commissioner Brian Newby presented a description of the election process with emphasis on registering to vote and the importance of voting. A special mock election was prepared for student to cast their ballot on the touch screen voting machines. Staff of the Election Office assisted students in the mock election. Seventy-two students voted, received a Future Voter sticker and a packet of election information to share with their families.
