Student Activities 2001
On November 18, 12 members of Boy Scout Pack 3375, Cobra Den from Brookridge Elementary School in Overland Park were guests of the Election Office. Karen Browning detailed the election process, answered questions and provided election related handouts for each 5th grader. The Scouts toured the facilities and cast ballots on the touch screen voting machines.
Sixty high school seniors participated in the American Legion County Council Student Leadership Program on October 25. The student leaders toured the county administration building to observe local government procedures. The Election Office partnered with the American Legion to provide election related materials to each student.
The student body at Shawnee Mission West High School elected Student Council Representatives of the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes and Freshman Class Officers on September 14. Students cast ballots on electronic voting machines. Over 1,034 students voted in the election. Eligible voters numbered 1,650. Students and PTSA members served as the Election Board.
The Freshman student body participated in an election for Freshman Class Representatives to the Student Council for 2001 - 2001 on September 13. Fifteen candidates had filed for 8 positions. Over 450 were eligible to vote and ballots were cast on electronic voting machines provided by the Election Office. Student Council members served as the Election Board.
The student newspaper at Johnson County Community College published the Kansas Voter Registration form in the September issue of the student newspaper. Students are invited to complete the registration form and mail it to the Election Office. This service has been provided to encourage participation in the democratic process.
Student Council leaders for Mill Valley High School were elected for 2001 - 2002 by the student body on May 18. The Election Board consisted of current Student Council members. Approximately 300 eligible voters cast ballots on electronic voting machines.
The student body of De Soto High School elected the 2001 - 2002 Student Council leadership on May 9. Votes were cast for Student Council officers and representatives by the 750 eligible voters on electronic voting machines. The current Student Council members served as the Election Board.
On May 8, Spring Hill Middle School students cast ballots for the officers of the Student Advisory Council for 2001-2002. Members of the current Advisory Council served as the Election Board and assisted the 340 eligible voters at the registration table and electronic voting machines.
Student Council Officers for 2001 - 2002 were elected at Shawnee Mission West High School on May 1. Eligible voters numbered approximately 1,400 students. The Election Board was manned by current Student Council Members. Voters cast ballots on electronic voting machines.
Young people and parents participating in the County's Child to Work Program toured the Election Office on April 26. The guests learned about the election process, toured the facilities, and cast ballots on the electronic voting machines. The Future Voters received informational election material packets.
The 4th Annual Career Fair was held on April 11 at Spring Hill Middle School. Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt was the featured career speaker to the sixth grade classes. The Election Office provided an informational display booth with election related handout materials. Students participated in the election process by casting ballots on electronic voting machines. Election results indicate: 1) Pizza is the food of choice; 2) A woman will be elected U.S. President in their lifetime; and 3) Parents are more aware of environmental issues than students.
On March 15, the student body of Shawnee Mission East High School elected Student Council Officers and Class Representatives for the 2001 - 2002 school year. Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors cast votes on electronic voting machine. The election board members were current representatives of the Student Council. Approximately 1,400 students were eligible to vote.
Over 60% of the eligible voters at Shawnee Mission North High School cast ballots for the Student Leadership in 2001-2002. Elections were held for officers of the Student Body, Senior, Junior and Sophomore classes. Members of the Student Council served as the election board and manned the electronic voting machines provided by the Election Office. Eligible voters totaled 1,868.
The student body at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School participated in the election process on Thursday, February 22, by electing Student Council Representatives for 2001 - 2002. The Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes voted on electronic voting machines and selected eight representatives from each class. Student Council members served as the
On February 12, twelve members of a Girl Scout Troop from Overland Park participated in a mock election on electronic voting machines. The Troop toured the Election Office, learned about the election process and received a packet of informational material.
Student Council President and Vice President for the school year 2001 - 2002 were elected at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School on February 2. Over 1800 students were eligible to vote and cast ballots on the electronic voting machines. Student Council members served as the election board by checking-in student voters and manning the voting machines. The election received media coverage reflecting the importance of voting from the prospective of a student.
The Election Office was host to twelve members of an Overland Park Cub Scout Troop on January 23. Following a tour of the Election Office and an informational session of the election process, the Scouts voted on an electronic voting machine. Each young person received a packet of material to share with their families.
