Student Activities 2000
High School students (16- and 17-year-olds) throughout the county were invited to serve as Student Election Workers on Election Day as a means of participating in the election process. 150 students participated in the November 2000 Election by attending a 3-hour training session and serving on the Election Board at the polls on Election Day.
Approximately 10,998 elementary school students participated in the "Celebrate the Vote" program sponsored by the Celebration of Patriotism Foundation of Johnson County. Students created reminder "VOTE" yard signs to be posted in their yards on Election Day. Students wore "I Celebrated Election Day" stickers in honor of Election Day.
The Election Office was host to 110 students from Indian Woods Middle School on December 15. As future voters, students shared thoughts and impressions of Election 2000, Florida recounts and Electoral College. After reviewing various methods of voting nationwide, students participated in casting ballots on electronic voting machines and on paper ballots, voting methods used Johnson County. Each student received current election information and voter registration forms. Sessions on the Election Process were conducted by Connie Schmidt, Debbie Tyrrel and Karen Browning.
The Election Office hosted the Kansas Student/Parent Mock Election Headquarters November 2, 2000. Kansas students joined students nationwide in casting their vote for President of the United States. Also on the mock ballot were United State Senators and Representatives. The ballot was prepared by the Election Office and distributed to teachers. Individual school results were transmitted to the Headquarters and compiled by students of Shawnee Mission South High School. Dr. Hal Jehle, Kansas Coordinator, organized the event. On September 14, Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, was the guest seminar speaker to students at Olathe South High School. Students were provided with current election information and voter registration forms. Mrs. Schmidt elaborated on the election process, voter participation and the importance of voting. Students participated in a question and answer session following the presentation.
On May 25, students of the Shawnee Mission TAP class and their teachers toured the Johnson County Election Office. After viewing the electronic voting machines, students cast their votes on a student voting machine. Handout materials were provided to each student.
Over 350 Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior class members elected Student Council Officers on May 11. The newly elected leadership will serve during 2000 - 2001 school year. Class Officers manned the voter area and the electronic voting machines.
On May 4, Spring Hill Middle School students cast ballots on electronic voting machines for members of the Student Advisory Council for the school year 2000-2001. Over 335 students were eligible to vote. Members of the current council served as the election board.
Sophomore, Junior and Senior class officers for the school year 2000-2001 were elected by the Shawnee Mission West High School student body on April 21. Student Council members served as the election board for the 1,919 eligible voters who voted on the electronic voting machines.
On April 7, the student body at Gardner High School elected the Student Council leadership for 2000-2001. Eligible voters totaled 750. Students served as the election board and assisted voters with the electronic voting machines.
8,925 Cast Voters in Presidential Primary Election
On March 28, 2000, the Student Presidential Preference Mock Election was conducted throughout schools in Kansas. Students had the opportunity to participate in the democratic process by voting for one candidate of their choice for the United States presidency. Teachers copied the Presidential Preference Ballot from this website for their classroom exercise, and faxed, phoned or e-mailed the school's results to the Kansas Election Headquarters (Johnson County Election Office). Student Council leaders from Shawnee Mission South High School joined Dr. Hal Jehle, Kansas Coordinator, at the Headquarters to tally the final election results when the polls closed at 5:00 p.m.

Shawnee Mission East High School held an election on March 9 to select the Student Council leadership for 2000-2001. Student leaders organized the election, served as the election board and provided assistance as students cast their ballots on the electronic voting machines. Number of students eligible to voter totaled 1,600.
March 7 was election day at Shawnee Mission North High School with 1,650 students eligible to vote for Student Council Officers 2000-2001. The student body cast votes on electronic voting machines with student leadership serving as the election board.
The Mid-Continent Council of Girl Scouts hosted over 300 young ladies at their annual National Fair at McAuliffe Elementary School on March 4. The scouts practiced the privilege of voting by reviewing a sample ballot and casting their votes on electronic voting machines. Senior scouts served as the election board and assisted the 151 voters at the machines. All scouts received election calendars and other related materials for their families.

Fifth Grade Classes of Prairie Star Elementary School invited Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, to speak on the Election Process - Celebrating Patriotism on February 29. Students received election related materials for classroom use and to share with their families. Three students volunteered to assist voters at the electronic voting machines where students cast ballots on generic questions.
The 65 students also voted on paper in a Presidential Preference Mock Election.

A "Youth in Democracy" activity flyer was created by the Election Office for distribution to all county schools. Suggested activities included voter registration drives, events to celebrate patriotism, student election workers and student election assistants.
Over 1,600 students were eligible to vote for Student Council Class Representatives for 2000-2001 at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School on February 24. Students organized the election, arranged for the voting machines, served as the election board and assisted fellow classmates at the electronic voting machines.
On February 24, 18 Special Education Students toured the election office and voted on electronic voting machines. Students learned about the election process, how to register to vote, and the importance of voting.
Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt presented celebrating Patriotism and Election Process program to the government classes at DeSoto High School on February 23. The classes received current election related material and 60 students cast their votes on electronic voting machines.
On February 20, Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, was the guest speaker for the American Politics class (MBA program) at Baker University. The 16 students actively participated in learning about the election process, importance of voting, and celebrating patriotism. Each student received voter registration cards and other election related materials.
Student Council Election
On February 4, the student body of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School cast votes for student council president and vice president. The winning officers will lead the Student Council in 2000-2001. Student leadership conducted the election with over 1,600 students eligible to vote. The Election Office supplied electronic voting machines.
