Student Activities 1998

Webelos Scouts - Pack 3375

On November 10, seven Webelos Scouts from Pack 3375, Den 1 and their leaders visited the Election Office on a field trip. The Webelos learned about the election process, toured the facilities and cast votes on electronic voting machine. Results: pizza and tacos were tied as favorite food; a woman will be elected U.S. President; and students are more aware of environmental issues than parents.

Oxford Middle School Students

Students of the English as a Second Language class of Oxford Middle School in Blue Valley School District toured the Election Office on November 10. Following an information session and tour of the facilities, the students cast their vote on an electronic voting machine. Results were: favorite food is pizza; a woman will be elected U.S. President in their lifetime; and parents are move aware of environmental issues than students.

Panther Patrol - Webelos Visit Election Office

Eight members of Pack 3080, Panther Patrol - Webelos visited the Election Office on October 27. Informational sessions included voting on an electronic voting machine, voting a paper ballots and a tour of the facilities. Results of voting on the student ballot were: pizza is the favorite food; a woman will be elected U.S. President in their lifetime; and students are more aware of environmental issues that adults. The students viewed the Election Office Web Site focusing on the Sample Ballot. The pack is sponsored by American Legion and was accompanied by three adults.

Overland Park Webelos 1

On October 26, members of Webelos 1, Pack 3493, Overland Park, participated in a patriotic tour of the Election Office. The scouts cast their votes on a student ballot on an electronic voting machine. Results indicated that the group's favorite food is pizza; a woman will be elected U.S. President in their lifetime; and parents are more aware of environmental issues than students. Following a tour of the building, viewing electronic voting machines and a question and answer session, the students voted a paper ballot on the candidates and issues which will appear on the November 3 General Election ballot. These results will be reported by Kids Voting Kansas. The group included 10 Webelos, 8 adults, 2 little brothers, and one little sister. The Webelos are sponsored by St. Marks United Methodist Church.

Leawood Cub Scouts

Nine Leawood Cub Scouts and their leaders visited the Election Office on October 13 for a tour of the facilities. The scouts voted on an electronic voting machine and placed American Flags and Vote Here signs on the grounds of the Election Office to announce the beginning of Advance Voting.

Awana Club Patriotism Field Trip

On August 12, the Awana Club of Vista Baptist Church participated in a patriotism field trip to the Election Office. Students toured the building, voted on an electronic voting machine and participated in a question and answer period. Results of the ballots cast indicate: 1) students prefer pizza over tacos or hamburgers; 2) parents are more aware of environmental issues than students; (3) students do not believe a woman would be elected president of the United States.

Summer Trails Program

On June 24, students from the Summer Trails program of the Olathe School District visited the Election Office. The ninth grade students met with the Election Commissioner who presented a demonstration of the election process in Johnson County. Students toured the building, voted on an electronic voting machine, and visited the Election Office Homepage on the Internet. Results of the ballots cast indicate: 1) students prefer tacos over pizza or hamburgers; 2) students are more aware of environmental issues than parents; (3) student votes were tied on whether or not a woman would be elected president of the United States.

Spring Hill Middle School Cast Votes

Student Advisory Council officers were elected on May 12 at Spring Hill Middle School. Over 350 students cast votes on electronic voting machines. Members of the Advisory Council served as the election board. Officers elected for 1998-1999 are: Jessica Hocker - President; Sarah Clifton - Vice President; Josie Gehrt - Secretary; and Dustin Hayes - Treasurer.

Indian Trail Junior High Election

On May 1, 500 junior high students at Indian Trail in Olathe voted for student council officers for 1998-1999. Votes were cast on electronic voting machines with the council officers serving as the election board. Those elected include: Scott Dalin - President, Renee Jennings - Vice President, Kristin Devaney - Secretary and Matt Suddock - Treasurer.

Shawnee Mission West High School

Students at Shawnee Mission West High School voted on April 24 for class officers for 1998-1999. Approximately 1,000 students cast their ballot on electronic voting machines during the school day. Officers elected for 1998-1999 school year are:

Senior Class: President - Michael Byrd, Vice President - Jennifer Bowen, Secretary - Stephanie Taylor, and Treasurer - Lindsay Taylor.

Junior Class: President - John Huff, Vice President - Laurel Minich, Secretary - Papal Kapur, and Treasurer - Amber Gerstle.

Sophomore Class: President - Roman Swoopes, Vice President - Ryan Flynn, and Secretary/Treasurer - Dinh Pham.

Election at Spring Hill High School

On April 21, 375 Spring Hill High School students voted on electronic voting machines for Student Council Officers for 1998-1999. Elected to serve are: Andrew Dreiling, President; Lily Adams, Vice President; Tara Tatum, Secretary; Lee Urban, Treasurer and Robin Huffman, Reporter.

Indian Woods Middle School Students
Tour Election Office

One hundred and fifteen students from Indian Woods Middle School were guests of the Election Office on April 21. The eighth grade students toured the facility, visited the Homepage on the Internet and voted on electronic voting. Woman President Elected in Your Lifetime More Aware of Environmental Issues
DeSoto High School Government Classes

On April 15, 1998, sixty students in DeSoto High School's government classes participated in a demonstration of the Election Process presented by Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner. Voter registration cards were completed by 54 students. Following a question and answer period, students voted in a Mock Election on electronic voting machines from the Election Office.

Shawnee Mission Northwest High School
Students Elect STUCO Officers

Jana Schmidt and Rick Ingraham were elected 1998-1999 Student Council President and Vice President at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. Other candidates were Nick Williams and Amy Cederland. Votes were cast on March 6 by 717 students on electronic voting machines provided by the Election Office. Student Council representatives from the Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes were elected in April with a majority of the student body voting.

Boy Scout Troop #89 Tours Election Office

On February 2, 1998, twelve members of Boy Scout Troop #89 in Olathe toured the Election Office as part of their citizenship program. Election Commissioner, Connie Schmidt, explained the election process and provided packets of materials to each Scout. The packets included: Statistical Profile of the Election Office, Directory of Elected Officials, Five Year Election Calendar from 1998 - 2002, Advance Voting Information, and a copy of the opening page of Election Office website.

Following a tour of the facilities and a visit to the Election Office website, the Scouts experienced casting their vote on the same voting machines that are used by adult voters during elections.
