Student Activities 1995

Program Created for Students

In September of 1995, the Election Office developed a new program to promote voter education and participation among students in Johnson County.

Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt met with the superintendents of all school districts with the program design.

The program included: (1) Providing personalized birthday cards to all 18-year-olds, including a letter and voter registration card; (2) Conducting presentations describing the election process including a demonstration of the electronic voting equipment; (3) Providing voting equipment for use at area Student Council elections, with students serving as election judges; (4) Conducting tours of our election facility; and (5) Conducting a Student Visual Arts Award contest. The winning entry would be used for promotional posters and articles to inform Johnson County citizens of the opportunity of Advance Voting in all elections.

Student Birthday Cards

Approximately 4,700 birthday cards for 18-year-olds were distributed to all Johnson County High Schools, along with a voter registration card and a letter from the Election Commissioner encouraging registering to vote. Every high school was a permanent voter registration site and their staffs received the appropriate training for distribution.

School Presentations

To introduce students to the election process, staff members visited various schools and spoke on the "Election Process". Students completed voter registration forms and were provided the opportunity to serve as an election worker. All students participated in a mock election by casting votes on electronic voting machines. The mock election ballot was specifically designed for high school students.

On November 10, staff participated in a Political Science class discussion at the Johnson County Community College.

On November 21, staff addressed 90 American Government class students at De Soto High School.

On December 14, staff participated with American Government instructors in a presentation to 200 students in seven classes. Students cast ballots in a Mock Election on electronic voting machines.
