Partisan Elections - Open and Closed Primary

Who Votes in the Primary Election
Technically, all Johnson County voters may vote in the August 1st primary election.
The Democratic August Primary Election is open to unaffiliated voters and voters registered as Democrats. Unaffiliated voters may vote in the primary without changing their affiliation to be Democratic if they prefer.
The Republican August Primary Election is open only to those registered as Republicans and unaffiliated voters who wish to affiliate as Republicans by filling out a new declaration card on election day.
Libertarian, Reform, and Unaffiliated voters are eligible to vote on non-partisan races and questions, if any. In this election, the only non-partisan item is a question in the Spring Hill School District. All relevant non-partisan items and questions also appear on the Democratic and Republican ballots.
Primary voting rules are established by the parties and state law, and are not established by the election office. Voters may cast only one ballot in any election.
Sample Ballot / Polling Place Locations

Sample ballot and polling place locator screen is available on our Election
Office website during countywide elections, beginning 20 days prior to the
election. Any registered voter can type in their name and date of birth,
and receive a listing of candidates that will appear on their ballot along
with the location of their polling place on Election Day.
Rotation of Candidate Names on Ballot

Kansas law requires that candidate names be rotated by precinct. Note: Precinct
Committee persons, 3rd Class Cities, Drainage District, and Presidential Preference Primary candidates
are not rotated. The rotation formula begins with the county in alphabetical
order by city, ward, and precinct (CWP) and candidates for a given contest
in alphabetical order. CWP's for the contest are identified, including the
number of eligible voters per precinct. Total eligible voters are divided by
the number of candidates to determine the number of voters in each rotation.
The initial rotation sequence is in candidate alphabetical order.
Write-In Candidates

When a voter chooses to vote for a write-in candidate not printed on the ballot,
each candidate must be individually reviewed to determine eligibility status.
The list of write-in candidates will be available after the election canvass
on Friday following Election Day.
Provisional Ballots

Provisional ballots are voted when a voter's registration is in question, or
when our records indicate the voter was already sent an advance ballot. Provisional
ballots are sealed in special envelopes at the polls and must be individually
researched and verified at the Election Office prior to presenting them to
the Board of Canvassers.
Unofficial Election Results

The timeliness of reporting election results in Johnson County is dependent
on: (1) number of voters in line when the polls close at 7:00 p.m.; (2) number
of voting machines reporting results; and (3) number of candidates and contests
on the ballot. The first unofficial partial result summary usually is by 7:30 p.m. and is posted on this website. This summary will include all advance votes. This information will be updated periodically throughout the evening until all voting machines have reported results into the central election computer. Final official election results will be available following certification by the Board of Canvassers.
Candidates have several options for receiving unofficial election results: (1) view the results on the Election Office website; (2) request a telephone call from the Election Office; or (3) receive the results in person at the Election Office.
Unofficial Election Results for Precinct Committees

Due to the large number of precinct committee candidates and contests during
the August primary election, the election night result summary will not include
these races. The unofficial election results for the precinct committee person
contests will be available as soon as possible the following day. If there
are write-in votes at the precinct level, these votes may determine the outcome
of precinct committee contests.
Final Official Election Results

The Board of Canvassers canvass the votes on the Monday following the election
at 9:00 a.m. at the Election Office, 2101 E. Kansas City Road. The Board of Canvassers determine
the validity of any provisional or challenged ballots. Following the processing
of the valid ballots, the official vote summary is certified by the Board
of Canvassers as the final official election results.
