Each election is unique in many ways.....the August 6, 2002 election set many records for Johnson County. Listed below are "firsts" and "records set" for historical purposes.
- First countywide election using the new touch screen voting machines - Johnson County is the first county in the Midwest to use this type of equipment
- First time that there were three separate candidate-filing deadlines in an August primary
- First time that delay of the August primary was considered
- First time that advance/absentee voting was delayed for one week due to extreme time constraints
- First time that the military/overseas returned ballot deadline was extended due to time constraints
- First time that voting machines were used to collect in-person advance votes at three early voting locations
- First time that County Commissioner races were non-partisan - resulting in three different ballots for each precinct in the county
- First time that voting locations were consolidated, reducing the number from 275 to 223
- First time that County and City IT staff assisted in opening and closing voting locations - 28 staff members volunteered their time
- First time that in just three weeks 1,118 election workers were trained in 22 three hour training sessions
- First time that election office staff met an airplane at KCI Airport to pick up ballots in order to meet the deadline for mailing ballots to voters
- Record number of precincts - 403 following statewide redistricting
- Record number of registered voters - 328,757
- Record number of voters processed in an August primary - 97,724
- Record number of advance ballots issued in an August primary - 24,422
