Thornburgh Swears-In Johnson County Election Commissioner

Tuesday, January 11, 2005
Topeka, KS – Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh today officially swore-in Brian Newby to the post of Johnson County Election Commissioner. The ceremony took place at the Johnson County Administration Building. Newby will serve the remainder of a four year term being vacated by Connie Schmidt. The term expires in September of 2006.
"Brian Newby brings experience in technology and the leadership skills necessary to continue the momentum established by Johnson County," stated Thornburgh. "I am confident that Johnson County will remain at the forefront and continue to be recognized as the national model for elections under Brian's leadership."
"It is an honor to be appointed, but it is an even greater honor to be chosen to succeed Connie Schmidt, who has set a high standard in this role," Newby said. "I am thrilled to lead this team and to continue the incredible momentum of fairness and performance everyone has come to expect from the election office."
Brian Newby most recently served as vice president for operations for Finity Technologies. Previously, he worked as the director of strategic planning for Sprint. Newby is an active member of the community and will resign from the Shawnee, Kansas city council at the end of January. He has held the seat since April of 2002.
Thornburgh appointed a five member search committee in November to handle the application and interview process. Upon completing the application and interview process, the selection committee recommended three candidates to the Secretary of State for his review. The new election commissioner was announced on January 7, 2004.
