Brian Newby Achieves Leadership Training Honor
March 12, 2005
Election Commissioner Brian Newby was recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) for achieving the Bronze level in its Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program. The NLC Leadership Training Council made the presentation in Washington, DC at the annual Congressional City Conference.
The Bronze Certificate level is achieved by local city officials when they earn 16 credits in all five of the core competency areas of municipal leadership. NLC members earn credit by successfully completing professional leadership development and training seminars sponsored by NLC’s Leadership Training Institute. Nearly 3,000 mayors, council members and local city leaders from across the United States participate annually in NLC Leadership Training Institute seminars. Each of the training seminars address one or more of the core competency areas of municipal leadership including cornerstone, catalyst, collaborator, communicator and competent practitioner.
The National League of Cities is committed to strengthening and promoting the leadership capacity of our nation's local elected officials. As part of the NLC mission to create stronger communities, the Leadership Training Institute provides local city officials with professional development opportunities that accentuate the vital personal skills and abilities needed to facilitate positive change and innovation within their local communities. At the same time, seminars are designed to explore the nature of and practice of local government leadership, as participants organize their professional development around the critical skills necessary for excellence in leadership.
Newby is one of fewer than three hundred and fifty NLC members to reach the Bronze level in the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program. NLC Leadership Training Council established the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program in 1999, with its primary aim to recognize and acknowledge excellence in local government leadership.
The League, headquartered in Washington DC, is the nation’s oldest and largest municipal organization, with a membership of nearly 1,800 cities and towns of all sizes. All of the nation’s 49 state municipal associations are also members of NLC, making the League a national representative of more than 18,000 municipal governments representing 225 million people throughout the United States.
