Faxed Voter Registration OK in Johnson County
OLATHE, KS – June 27, 2008 – Save gasoline! Save a stamp! Submit your voter registration application by fax!
As everyday prices spiral upward, the Johnson County, Kansas, Election Office is pleased to announce that citizens may now submit voter registration forms and identification by fax.
Faxing not only saves money, it makes it easier for voters to register and for the Election Office to process applications. The change reflects the recently adopted policy by the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office to accept voter registration applications by fax, after a request by the Johnson County Election Office.
“Faxing registrations adds convenience to the voter and reduces mail processing time and taxpayer costs,” said Election Commissioner Brian Newby.
Voter registration forms may be downloaded from the Election Office website at www.jocoelection.org. Fax the completed and signed application to (913) 791-8934 or (913) 791-8935, or scan the completed and signed application and e-mail to registration@jocoelection.org.
The registration form must contain a signature which can be compared when “. . . a registered voter's signature becomes subject to verification by the county election officer . . .” (K.S.A. 25-2309b (b)), typically when the voter returns a mail ballot or signs a petition.
Faxing certain types of documents is generally permissible under the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA). Passed in 2000, UETA authorizes electronic transmissions as long as both parties in the transmission agree to accomplish it electronically.
First-time voters should either bring identification with them when they vote or plan to mail a copy of their identification with their registration. Typically, identifications with photos are not readable when faxed.
The Election Office administers all federal, state and local elections for some 340,000 voters in Johnson County, Kansas. These elections include more than 1,900 elected positions in 540 voting districts. Visit us on the web at www.jocoelection.org.
