The City of DeSoto is a Third Class City. An election is held every two years (odd numbered years). DeSoto is served by a Mayor and 5 Council Members At-Large. All are elected to 4 year terms. Three Council Members At-Large are elected in 1999. The Mayor and 2 Council Members At-Large will be elected in 2001.

An election is held every two years (odd numbered years). Board Members are elected to 4 year terms. Board Member Positions 1, 2, 3, and 7 (At-Large) are elected in 1999. Board Member Positions 4, 5, and 6 will be elected in 2001.

If a Primary Election is held, voters vote only for the board member position in which they live and the at-large position. In the General Election, voters vote for all positions.
