How to File for Office

• Filing deadline is ten weeks prior to the general election at 12:00 noon.
  
  
• Declaration of Intention (Filing Form) - All candidates must complete this form at their City Hall in the presence of the City Clerk. The City Clerk accepting the Filing Form should sign on the left side.
• Fax to the Election Office at (913) 791-1753.
• Mail the original Declaration of Intention (Filing Form) and the Filing Fee to the Election Office.
  
  
• Statement of Substantial Interests Form - All candidates must complete this form.
• This form may be completed at the time of filing.
• The candidate may take this form; however, it must be completed and returned to the City Clerk no later than 10 days after the filing deadline.
• This form is filed with the City Clerk and remains in the City files.

Olathe, Overland Park

• 1st Class cities with population over 100,000 collect a $50 Filing Fee and a $35 Report Fee* in two separate checks.
• Fax a copy of the Filing Form to Election Office. Fax: (913) 791-1753.
• Mail the $50 Filing Fee and Declaration of Intention (Filing Form) to Election Office.
• *The $35 Report Fee is the city's responsible to file with Topeka.

Leawood, Lenexa, Prairie Village, Shawnee

• 1st Class cities with population between 5,000-100,000 collect a $10 Filing Fee and a $35 Report Fee* in two separate checks.
• Forward the $10 Filing Fee and Declaration of Intention (Filing Form) to Election Office. Fax: (913) 791-1753.
• *The $35 Report Fee is the city's responsibility to file with Topeka.

De Soto, Gardner, Merriam, Mission, Roeland Park

• 2nd Class cities, with a population between 5,000 - 100,000, collect a $10 Filing Fee.
• Forward the Filing Fee and Declaration of Intention (Filing Form) to the Election Office. Fax: (913) 791-1753.

Edgerton, Fairway, Lake Quivira, Mission Hills, Mission Woods, Spring Hill, Westwood, Westwood Hills

• Cities with population less than 5000 collect a $5 Filing Fee.
• Forward the Filing Fee and Declaration of Intention (Filing Form) to the Election Office. Fax: (913) 791-1753.

Filing by Petition and Petition Forms

• Petition Forms should be provided to any candidate who wishes to file by petition, in lieu of a filing fee.
• The Petition Forms - Nomination Petition Form (PDF) and Affidavit (PDF) of Qualified Elector or Candidate Form are in a PDF format. This is a two page form. Both pages must be completed in order to be valid and page 2 must be notarized. Forms may be reproduced as needed.
• After the petition is complete with signatures, it must be filed at City Hall.
• Filing deadline for petitions is ten weeks prior to the general election at 12:00 noon.

• 1st Class City candidates who file by petition are required to pay $35 Report Fee.

Petition Information

• Petition should be turned in several days prior to the filing deadline to allow for signature verification.
• If the petition is turned in close to the deadline and is not valid; it might be too late for the candidate to pay a filing fee.
• Candidate should collect more signatures than required in the event some of the signatures are not valid.
• If more than one form is being circulated for the same candidate, all forms must be submitted at the same time to City Hall.
• Every petition carrier must be a qualified elector residing in the appropriate election district.
• The Petition Form is a two page form. Both pages must be completed in order to be valid and page 2 must be notarized.
