Community Outreach Activities 2006
Ten citizens from the county of Jordan toured the Johnson County Election Office on November 7. The visitors were hosted by Lenexa City Council Member Amy Slater who is a member of the exchange program "American Council of Young Political Leaders."
While visiting in Kansas, the delegation reviewed local government matters, with a focus on election processes and observed our system first-hand.
Brian Newby, Election Commissioner, detailed the election process in Kansas and specifically Johnson County. Topics included voter registration, convenience of voting, recruitment of election workers, techniques to communicate with voters, plus other pertinent election information.
Karen Browning, Assistant Election Commissioner, provided each guest with election related materials and toured the group through the facility. The delegates participated in a mock election on the voting machines.
Karen Jackson, Election Coordinator, hosted the "Elections 2006" booth at Senior Quest 2006 at the Overland Park Convention Center. Visitors received election related information, voter registration, applications to vote by mail, and election worker information. Over 1800 seniors attended the annual event and visited over 100 exhibitor booths.
Election Commissioner Brian Newby was the guest speaker at the October meeting of the Greater Johnson County Business and Professional Women. Brian shared election related information on the fall general election, used of technology as a means of communication to the voters and making your vote count.
Elections 2006 was topic of discussion at the Northeast Johnson County Republican Women's Club. Guest speaker Brian Newby shared the newly implemented voter notification systems of the Election Office. Guests were informed about pertinent election related information and how they could become a part of the election process.
Election Commissioner Brian Newby was the guest speaker at the American Stroke Foundation meeting. The presentation included elections in 2006, voter notification systems for elections and the importance of active participation in the election process.
Throughout the year, the Election Office provided community service organizations and business groups with election related materials encouraging voter registration and voter participation.
