Community Outreach Activities 2005

AARP Meeting

Brian Newby, Election Commissioner, was the guest speaker at the monthly AARP meeting in Overland Park on October 11. The presentation on "Ten Drivers Impacting Johnson County Elections" was followed by a question and answer period. Attendees received a packet of election related materials for the 2006 election year.

Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus of Good Shepherd Council 11126 in Shawnee honored police, firefighters and EMTs on September 18. Over 40 uniform members and families were in attendance. Guest speakers were Jeff Myers, Mayor of Shawnee, and Election Commissioner Brian Newby who shared election related information and expressed appreciation to those who serve as election workers.

150th Anniversary of Johnson County

The Election Office joined in the celebration of the Johnson County's 150th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District.

A "Birthday in the Park" was the theme for the countywide event on September 17 at Shawnee Mission Park. The Election Office provided election related materials and interactive activities for booth visitors.

Volunteer Fair

The 4th annual "Take a Moment to Make a Difference" Volunteer Fair was held on August 23 at Metcalf South shopping center. The event was sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Johnson County.

The Election Office joined with 72 other community groups in the booth area to highlight volunteer opportunities for residences of all ages. Staff members, Karen Jackson and Anthony Gutierrez, welcomed visitors and shared information about serving as election workers at the polling places.

Discover Olathe

The Election Office joined with other agencies and organizations in the 3rd annual Discover Olathe event at the Great Mall of the Great Plains. Over 100 different groups and activities provided community awareness and volunteer opportunities for the 6,000 visitors.

Election Office staff members, Tom Ray and Karen Jackson, distributed election related materials and Election Worker applications. Visitors were encouraged to visit the Election Office and learn the election process.
