Community Outreach Activities 2004
The Election Office joined with other county departments in the United Way Special Event Day on September 30 at the Johnson County Administration Building. Voter registration and early voting information was distributed to each guest attending the event.
Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, was a guest speaker at the Senior Leadership seminar on September 30 at the Johnson County Administration Building. Connie highlighted the presidential election, information on the Election Office website, voter registration and early voting. A question and answer period followed the presentation and each member received a packet of election information.
Senior Quest 2004 event was held on September 29 at the Overland Park Convention Center. The Election Office joined the 100 exhibitors and showcased the election process. Guests were provided with election related information, voter registration, applications to vote by mail, and election worker information. Over 1400 seniors attended the annual event.
The Election Office community outreach team joined with the Johnson County Library to celebrate the Hispanic culture in our community on September 17 at Oak Park Library. Guests at the event were encouraged to register to vote and provided election information on voting options in Johnson County.
On September 14, Diane Burnett and Karen Browning welcomed members of the Independent Living Program to the Election Office. The election process, voter registration and early voting options were discussed. Guests voted in a mock election on the touch screen voting machines, participated in a question and answer session and were given a tour of the facilities. Handout materials were provided.
On July 2, Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt was the guest speaker at the meeting of the Merriam Kiwanis and provided information about the election process for the 2004 primary and general elections. Members were encouraged to join the Election Worker Team and participate in the election process by serving as election workers.
The Election Office hosted members of the League of Women Voters of Johnson County on March 13. Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt and LWV member Gordon Elliott discussed "Security of Electronic Voting Machines." Members participated in a question and answer session and were given a tour of the warehouse operation. Handout materials were provided and members were encourage to serve as election workers in 2004.
The public attended an Open House and Tour of the Election Office on Saturday, February 28 at 9:00 a.m., hosted by Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt.
During the open house, guests learned how polling places are selected and assigned; previewed information available on our website; reviewed early voting options and toured the voting equipment warehouse operation. Guests were encouraged to become a partner in the election process by serving as election workers. A question and answer followed the tour.
