Community Outreach Activities 2003

Greater Kansas City Chapter of ARMA

Over 50 members of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of ARMA visited the Election Office on November 12. Connie Schmidt explained the records management system of an Election Office. Following the presentation, guests were given a tour of the facilities.

Senior Leadership

On October 2, Connie Schmidt was a guest speak at Johnson County Senior Leadership program held at the Administration Building. The presentation included the election process for 2004, importance of voting and volunteer opportunities. The twenty attendees received packets of election related materials and were invited to serve as election workers in 2004.

Senior Quest

On October 3, the Election Office participated in the county's annual Senior Quest event at the Overland Park Convention Center. Visitors were invited to vote in a mock election on the touch screen voting machines and received election related information. A special guest appearance featured Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner and "Votey", the interactive robotic vehicle.

Step-Up Program

The Importance of Voting was presented by Connie Schmidt on September 22 to 20 members of the Step-Up Program in Olathe. The election process in Johnson County was explained and members were given the opportunity to register to vote. Election information was distributed.

Mothers-to-Mothers Program

On September 15, Election Manager Tom Ray was the guest speaker at the Mothers-to-Mothers Program in Olathe. Highlights of the presentation included "How to be involved as an Election Worker", and the" Adopt a Polling Program." The 25 members received an election calendars and election related information.

Friends of Kansas City

Connie Schmidt met with 40 new residents of the metropolitan area on September 11 at the Leawood Country Club. Attendee learned of the election process and the importance of voting. Voter registration forms were distributed as well as election calendars.

Lenexa Rotary Club

"Future Elections in Johnson County" was the topic presented by Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt at the Lenexa Rotary Club meeting on March 14 at Lakeview Village. Members received information about the election process, security of elections, and importance of voting.

Management and Leadership Class - MNU

Connie Schmidt was the guest speaker at the Management and Leadership adult degree completion program at MidAmerica Nazarene University on January 13. Ms. Schmidt spoke of her personal perspective on leadership, including articulating and facilitating an organization's vision; inspiring employees; implementing change; and challenges and benefits of temporary employees. Students in the class will receive a Bachelor's degree in Management and Human Relations in February.
