Community Outreach Activities 2001
Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, was the guest speaker at the Northeast NAACP meeting on Saturday, November 17th. The topic was "Voting - Your Responsibility, Your Privilege." Attendees participated in a hand-on demonstration of the touch screen voting machines.
On October 23, the Election Office was invited to demonstrate the new touch screen voting machines to 200 guests attending the community / parent meeting at the Olathe South High School. Guests had the opportunity to cast a ballot on the voting machines and received "I Touched the Future" stickers. Staff members were Rose Lapaglia, Jeanie Nichols and Karen Jackson.
The new touch screen voting machine was demonstrated to 50 members of the Leawood Rotary Club on October 11. Connie Schmidt shared myths and facts about Election 2000. Members were provided materials on Adopt a Polling Place and the Celebration of Patriotism Foundation.
The Johnson County new voting machines received a "thumbs up" from visitors attending Senior Quest on September 20 at the Shawnee Civic Center. Senior citizens from across the county visited the Election Office booth for registration materials, election worker applications and advance voting information. The touch screen voting machine featured a mock election. Over 65 guests cast votes.
On September 20, Connie Schmidt was a guest speaker at the Johnson County Senior Leadership class at the Administration Building. The 20 class members learned about Elections in Johnson County - Our Past and Our Future. Members received election related information and had an opportunity to have a hands-on demonstration of the new voting machine.
The Election Commissioner was the featured speaker at Lenexa Kiwanis meeting on September 11. Members were give highlights of Election 2000, future elections, and invited to serve as election workers in 2002. The Global Touch Screen Voting Machine was demonstrated.
On September 6, Connie Schmidt presented a program entitled "Election 2000 - Myths and Facts" at the Olathe Optimist Club meeting at the Center of Grace Church. Members were invited to participate in the Adopt a Polling Place Program by providing election workers for Elections 2002.
In August, the Election Office was host to two visiting delegates from the Ukraine. The delegates and interpreter toured the facilities and were introduced to the election process in Kansas and Johnson County. Student and Community Outreach Programs were highlighted along with our website and programs to promote voting.
To promote voting, the Election Office participated in the De Soto Watermelon Festival Parade and Old Settler's Day Parade in Olathe with the Vote-Mobile. The white van featured signage with the word "VOTE" on the sides, American Eagle and Election Office information.
Connie Schmidt was the guest speaker at the Olathe Clockwinder's Optimist Club and presented information about Elections 2000 and Election Reform. Members voted in a mock election on the new Global Touch Screen Voting Machine.
Election 2000 was the topic presented by the Election Commissioner at the Lenexa Rotary Club meeting at the North Point Building of Lakeview Village on July 20. The Global Touch Screen Voting Machine was demonstrated with members participating in a mock election.
A 2001 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) was presented to the Johnson County Election Office in recognition of the "Celebration of Patriotism" program.
On July 9, Connie Schmidt attended the Johnson County Republican Women's Club meeting and spoke on the election process and the importance of voting.
"Past and Future Elections" was the topic at the Olathe Evening Lions Club meeting on June 11 at the Holiday Inn in Olathe. Connie Schmidt demonstrated the AccuVote-TS touch screen voting machine.
The Election Commissioner spoke at the Johnson County Rotary Club meeting on June 7 and demonstrated the AccuVote-TS touch screen voting machine.
On June 6 meeting at Lenexa City Hall. A power-point presentation included nationwide election information as well as Johnson County elections. The new AccuVote-TS touch screen voting machine was demonstrated.
On May 18, Connie Schmidt was the speaker at the Merriam Kiwanis and focused on Elections 2000 and future voting trends across the nation.
Elections 2000 was the topic of guest speaker, Connie Schmidt, at the AARP meeting on April 10. A question and answer session followed the presentation.
Connie Schmidt participated in Leadership Olathe on February 23 and provided election-related information to each attendee.
On February 15, Connie Schmidt was the guest speaker at the Olathe Rotary meeting and focused on Elections 2000 throughout the nation and in Johnson County.
The Celebration of Patriotism Foundation issued its first annual report highlighting the Election 2000 programs, including the participation in election related activities of 13,471 students from 42 schools throughout the county.
Staff members conducted tours of the Election Office for candidates and visitors from the county. Visitors reviewed the election process and received related informational flyers.
Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, participated in an "Under the Clock" radio interview at Union Station in January. The discussion centered on Elections 2000.
