Community Outreach Activities 1999

Making Voting Popular

Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, was the guest speaker at the Northeast Johnson County Republican Women's Club on February 8 and at the Olathe Chamber of Commerce Leadership on February 19. The presentation was entitled "Making Voting Popular", a program to recruit election workers.

Tours of Election Office

Two candidates visited the Election Office for a tour of the facilities and to learn about the election process.

Directory of Election Officials

The Election Office and the League of Women Voters united efforts to publish a 1999 -2001 Directory of Elected Officials for the public.

Election Information Distributed

Election materials were distributed to attendees at the TIME/National Association of State Boards of Education Award Ceremony and Shawnee Mission School District R&D Forum.

Achievement Award from NACo

A 1999 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) was presented to the Johnson County Election Office in recognition of the creative and effective "Making Voting Popular" program.

Involvement in the Election Process

In September, the Election Commissioner was the guest speaker at the Johnson County League of Women Voters' fall business meeting. The presentation included "Promoting the Vote", "Making Voting Popular", and the importance of active participation in the election process.

Celebration of Patriotism Foundation


Connie Schmidt received approval from the Kansas Secretary of State for the establishment of a non-profit foundation to encourage participation in the election process and to promote voting. A total of twenty individuals agreed to serve as members of the Board of Directors.

The Celebration of Patriotism Foundation of Johnson County is a non-partisan 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging, inspiring, educating, and motivating the community to be involved and participate in the democratic process.

In expanding the excellent voter education efforts of the Johnson County Election Office, the Foundation will focus on Student Education, Community Education, Corporate Partnerships, Community/Volunteer Participation, and Election Day Outcomes.

Programs will emphasize "Walk the Vote," "Talk the Vote," and "Celebrate the Vote."

Johnson County Senior Leadership

Connie Schmidt was a guest speaker at the Johnson County Senior Leadership program on October 7. The topic was "Opportunities for Leadership in Volunteer Activities."

Republican Party

Three staff members assisted in the verification of registered voters at the Johnson County Republican Party meeting held at Shawnee Mission South High School.
