Community Outreach Activities 1998

Public Access Terminal

In February of 1998 a Voter Access Terminal was installed in the Election Office library to assist the public in processing voter registration information requests. Visitors were provided with instructions from a staff member and written easy-to-use instructions.

Tours of Election Office

In the spring, staff members conducted numerous tours of the Election Office and provided election-related information to the public and candidates.

Making Voting Popular

The Election Commissioner coordinated activities with election officials in the bi-state metropolitan area (Jackson, Clay, Platte and Kansas City, Missouri, election offices; and Wyandotte and Johnson County election offices in Kansas) to plan for implementation of the "Making Voting Popular" initiative for recruitment of election workers.

Guest Speaker

The Election Commissioner was the guest speaker at the following organizational meetings throughout the county. Topics included Advance Voting, Voter Turnout, 1998 Elections and the Making Voting Popular program.

Informing the Public through the Media

Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner, appeared on the "Live on Nine" TV program, moderated by Mike Mahoney. The topic was voter turnout in special elections - a comparison between polling place and mail ballot election turnout. Also appearing on the show was Sharon Turner, Co-Director of the Kansas City, Missouri Election Board. The Program aired on Sunday, February 8, 1998.

Connie Schmidt, Election Commissioner was interviewed and taped for a segment on TV4, "Surfing the Net" featuring the Election Office website. The segment aired on July 22, 1998.

In July, The Kansas City Star, Sun Publications, WDAF TV4, KMBC TV 9, and NBC TV 41 interviewed the Election Commissioner about pending elections and the election process.

Mike Shannon conducted a radio interview on August 5 with Connie Schmidt regarding the pending election.

KMBZ and KCFX Radio interviewed the Election Commissioner about the "Making Voting Popular" program.
