Community Outreach Activities 1997

Achievement Award from NACo

A 1997 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) was presented to the Johnson County Election Office in recognition of the Promoting Voting - Student and Community Outreach Programs.

Special Registration Sites

In the spring of 1997, staff assisted in opening 26 special registration sites at various businesses, churches, schools, and malls to encourage voter registration.

Tours of Election Office

Staff members conducted eight tours of the Election Office facilities to interested patrons, candidates and community groups.

Telecable Program

The Election Commissioner was a guest on the City of Olathe telecable program "City at Work" with Olathe Mayor Larry Campbell and presented current voter Information.

Guest Speaker

The Election Commissioner was a guest speaker at Missouri Secretary of State Town Meeting, Missouri Election Officials Conference, Overland Park Leadership, and Vision & Values Orientation Program. The presentations focused on involvement in the election process.

The Election Commissioner presented a "Promoting Voting" program at the Midwest Election Officials Conference (MEOC) Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in December 1997.

The Election Office hosted the monthly meeting of the American Association of University Women, Shawnee Mission Branch. Representative Gerry Ray and Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt were the guest speakers.

Turkey Creek Festival

The Election Office provided electronic voting machines for a mock election by the public at Turkey Creek Festival activities. Election workers volunteered to provide voting machine instructions and conduct voter registration.

Voter Registration

In the summer, three outpost special registration sites were set up and supplied with materials. Voter registration was available at the Lenexa Spinach Festival and Olathe's Annual Johnson County Old Settlers.

TTY Equipment

Research conducted on the "TTY" telephone equipment and telephone line for the deaf resulted in the installation of a "TTY" for the office. The phone number and extension (782-3441 x3307) were published in the newspapers.
