Community Outreach Activities 1995

Voter Registration Drive

A new Voter Registration Drive program was implemented to promote participation in the 1996 election. Staff contacted Chambers of Commerce, homes associations, churches, shopping malls, area city festivals and major corporations throughout the County to conduct voter registration drives and to encourage voter participation. Members of the League of Women Voters and current Election Workers volunteered to assist with the project.

Staff members conducted five registration drives with a total of 347 new registered voters. Through our contacts with various associations, companies, and corporations, a listing of 18 future voter registration drives was created. Staff members trained 107 volunteers to work during the registration drives. Additional volunteers signed up to receive training at a later date.

Advance Voting Brochure

To inform the public about the Advance Voting Options, a brochure describing Advance Voting was designed in-house for distribution to various voter registration sites and city halls.

Publication of "Election News"

In December, staff created "Election News", a fact sheet on various topics of interest to the public. This publication was prepared in-house and was distributed to all registration sites, precinct committee people, news media, Johnson County public relation officers, political groups, chambers of commerce, and civic organizations.

Invitation to Organizations and Chambers

Information was sent to a variety of civic organizations and chambers of commerce regarding the availability of staff members to speak at monthly meetings or host open houses at the Election Office. A tour and open house for the Lenexa Republican Woman's Club, a Chamber Coffee for the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce, and a guest speaking engagement were scheduled for January 1996.

City Clerks and Staff Visit Election Office

On December 18, the office hosted an appreciation luncheon and tour for all City Clerks and their staff. Clerks from 14 cities throughout the County were in attendance. Information was distributed regarding local candidate filings, advance voting, and election workers. The guests toured the facilities of the Election Office.
